Mauro Icardi admits he’s not the ‘perfect fit’ for the Juventus midfield

The Italy international admits he has not always felt the most comfortable in his role at the heart of Juve’s attack.

The 23-year-old was linked with moves to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain but was ultimately forced to settle for the position at Juventus.

“It’s not an easy position to play but I think I’m a very good footballer,” Icardio told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’m used to playing in a defensive position, but I have to work hard to become a better footballer.”

Juventus’ Serie A title challenge has been undermined by the arrivals of Mario Mandzukic and Daniele De Rossi.

It is a position the centre-back admits is not ideal.

“In order to play in a central role I need to be able to play with more freedom,” Icardsi added.

“For me, the most important thing is to have a good mentality.”

The way I see it, I have a great opportunity to be the best in the world.

“There’s no reason to doubt myself in this position.

I am very grateful to the coach.”

Mauro Icardsio celebrates scoring against Juventus in the Serie A Champions League final.

“I believe I’m good enough for this role.

The coach has convinced me that I am the best at this position.”

The Italian international believes he is a ‘great footballer’ but admits he does not feel the most familiar at Juventus’ centre-half position.

“If I had to choose one position, it would be the one where I am used to.

I’m not the perfect fit,” ICardi said.”

But I am not afraid of the challenges ahead.”
